Missing the Point?

January 8th, 2005 · 2 Comments · 12 views

Talked to a kid yesterday who got hurt in a game. I asked him how he was and his response was “I’m well enough to play Halo!” His mom was sitting in the seat next to him and he was/is in the middle of a week long grounding from Halo.

I think if Cooper did that to me - he’d be lucky to see the X-box ever again.

As an adult who is called and has a burden to reach the post Gen X/Y culture, I am in an awkward spot. Know and experience enough of their world to engage it, speak intelligently about it and bring Light to it. It’s the only position I know that lends itself to ticking off both the students and the parents. :) That’s why they pay me the big bucks.

It makes me sick to hear adults trash video games - as if it was the bane of existence and the root of all things evil in the student world. It makes me sick to hear students attempt to justify the lopsided amount of time most of them do spend playing video games.

The point that I think has been lost in all of this is this - anything that becomes a stumbling block or an idol before God must be destroyed. Cut the hand off, pluck out the eye, unplug the box, never touch a drink, end the relationship. Whatever it is that keeps us from saying yes to Jesus, must die.

And as a believer, we know that God disciplines his kids. So if we don’t kill it, he will. In his time, his way. If we say that the only thing we desire is to have Christ formed in us and to know him deeper, he will grant that desire no matter what it costs or what inconveniences it might cause.

End of sermon.
