The Official Tolerable Chick Flick List

February 9th, 2005 · 15 Comments · 25 views

If I’m forced to watch a Chick Flick, I want a couple of things in it.

First, the chick has to be hot.

Okay - I was just kidding…kinda.

I’m gonna need some humor and I’m gonna need some sarcasm.

It would help if the movie had a hint of reality/responsibility. No slapping a kid on an airplane from Seattle to New York. No “My whole life was meaningless until you arrived” romanticism.

Only the top one is ranked. Why? Because the differences between the films are so insignificant, you would have to score an 87 or higher on a Nerd Test for it to matter.

Casablanca - This might be one of the greatest movies of all time. If you haven’t seen it , it is obvious you are not a movie lover.

The REST of the REST

The Princess Bride
- Amy is arguing that this isn’t a chick flick. Well, it’s my list. If she doesn’t want to include it in her’s, that’s fine. It’s got a girl, true love, rescue the princess, kill the bad guy, and Billy Crystal.

While You Were Sleeping
- The greatest exchange in Chick Flick history. “You suck” “I suck or the outfit sucks?” “It’s a toss-up.”

A League of their Own - I know, “not a chick-flick.” Yes it is. It is about WOMEN’S BASEBALL. That alone qualifies it. The fact that you get to see Tom Hanks in a demeaning, sarcastic attitude the whole film makes it watchable. So many one-liners in this film. “I loved you in the Wizard of Oz.”

One Fine Day - Clooney and Pfeifer are hilarious. Amanda Peete is quite funny. Marble up the nose humor goes a long way.

Miss Cogeniality - You just gotta love Sandra Bullock. Captain Kirk and Michael Caine steal the show.

Sweet Home Alabama - The movie is okay. Just has Alabama in it. On second thought - avoid this film. It’s got major gush in it.

You’ve Got Mail
- Dave Chappelle is hilarious. “She makes coffee nervous.”

Return To Me - Cool story, spiritual tie ins everywhere, plus Carroll O’Connor’s final film, Belushi add some serious laughs. “Everyone just calm the down.”

Chasing Liberty
- don’t really love the movie but was filmed in Prague, my favorite city, and it was cool to see where we walked.

HONORABLE MENTIONS FOR A SERIOUS DISCUSSION NIGHT

Now I am going to throw two movies at you that I think every married couple should watch, then go out for coffee for 2 hours and talk about. They bring up MAJOR issues that I think most of us married folk are uncomfortable talking about.

Moulin Rogue
This isn’t a kids movie, folks. How far would you pursue your love? What would keep you from chasing after her/him? Plus the ’80s music is cool. What kind of tests could your love stand?

Lost In Translation
Funny and raw. Bill Murray’s on the bed thinking about cheating on his wife is the best written and acted scene I’ve seen on this topic ever.

Okay - I think I am done.

I have to admit, that’s an honorable list. I would have to agree that “Return to Me” is actually a great story line with great spiritual overtones in it. I think David Duchovnsdflkjy (whatever) and Minnie Driver do a great job in that movie.

    WARNING: UN-MASCULINE COMMENT COMING!!!!

The part that gets me in that movie is when David comes home after his wife dies, and the dog just stays at the door waiting for her to come home. Dang…I’m getting jerked up just thinking about it.

I will allow us a moment here because I too think that is the most realistic depiction of grief in a movie. There isn’t this uncontrollable fit - just the reality and shock hitting all at once.

Plus - beautiful imagery of his grief becoming the hope for another family…kinda reminds me of the cross.

You HAD to throw in my score, didn’t you…it was the only way you could have a link in this post.

from a girl’s perspective, your list isn’t terrible. i do have to add a few movies to your list, however. First, to the Rest of the Rest List, “Three to Tango” is a great movie, so is “Fools Rush In.” They’re not too “girly,” and they’re full of funny/sarcastic humor.

And to your Honorable Mention/Every Couple Must See List, add “The Story of Us”…its a two hour marriage counseling session…all about conflict management.

    2 comments to Virginia:

    1) Fools Rush In is a fantastic movie. Good humor, decent melodrama. Plus, it helps that Salma Hayek was the lead girl (to Grant’s first point, the chick has to be HOT…and Salma fits that profile…and maybe even defines it)

    2) The Story of Us: by far the 2nd most depressing movie I have ever seen (lead by a slim margin by When a Man Loves a Woman).

Fools Rush In was an incredibly hard movie to rate. To Nelson’s first point about Selma - yes. Define is a good word choice. However - the movie has Matthew Perry in it. 25 minutes once a week is a stretch for me - 120 minutes in one setting sends me over the edge. So, no, it didn’t make my list although Selma made it close.

The Story of Us…major potential with Bruce Willis AND Michelle Pfeiffer AND Rob Reiner directing. Then the movie started. I don’t know what happened while filming and editing this movie. Were they all on meds? Did they have 45 straight days of PMS and wrong side of the bed issues?

Virginia - we love you. We think you are wonderful. I can’t wait to meet you in person. But as a woman, it might just be that - just like my wife - however noble your intentions may be - it might just be that picking out tolerable chick flicks for a guy “isn’t your gifting.”

have either of you seen “Three to Tango”?

  • 8 Grant // Feb 9, 2005 at 1:40 pm

I am ashamed to say - that yes. I have seen it.

It’s got Matthew Perry in it. And he’s acting gay - which actually works for him but -

It’s got Matthew Perry in it.

It’s got Matthew Perry in it.

Did I mention, it’s got Matthew Perry in it?

There is no way - ever that a Matthew Perry romantic comeday makes a bearable movie. If Selma couldn’t rescue him - there isn’t a way on the planet that Neve Campbell is.

this is a really funny topic and the show according to jim actually adressed it the other night. jim (jim belushi)and his wife cheryl are renting movies. jim gets robot wars and crotch shots 2 and cheryl gets the bells of portugal. well of course jim doesnt watch it, and its time to take the movies back. this leads to a funny exchange about how they will lose heat because they are going to be late. they dont take the movies back because cheryl hasnt watched hers yetr. so that night her brother(the big sappy brother) watches it and jim is intrigued by the nazi part and starts watching it. in the end he is crying. cheryl finds out he is crying and is completely freaked out. in the beginning she says she likes when a man has a sensative emotional side and jim says no, women like it when men are toguh and dont show emotions. so cheryl starts picturing jim as a big baby, and then jim tells her about how the the portuguese cathedral is showing (the sequel to the bells of portugal) so they go see it and cheryl is like enough. i hate it when you cry and you cant see any more chick flicks ever. jim then reveals it is all part of his scheme to show cheryl that men dont need to watch chick flicks. looks like hollywood got something right.

I agree with the list for the most part, but I wouldn’t put A Leauge of Their Own or The Princess Bride in as chick flicks. I mean, those are movies that I wouldn’t mind owning.
P.S: “I loved you in The Wizard of Oz.”

Add one to the list. Hitch was extreemly tolerable, if you would consider that a chick flick.

Delete The Princess Bride?!?!?! Possibly the greatest movie ever made, chick flick or not?!?! Are you people on crack?!?!?!? Ok, i’m better now, but seriously, it’s not a chick flick? Um, yes, it’s totally a chick flick; it’s got true love and rescuing the princess from the evil prince whom she dosen’t love and is planning to kill her for crying out loud! It may not fall in the romantic comedy category, but every girl wants a Westly, and that alone makes it a girl movie. There are other reasons, but that one you can’t debate. Period. Well, unless the girl’s gay. Then she’d probably want a Buttercup
