The Wall

I’ve hit it. I’m preaching again this weekend. And it’s not that I don’t have anything to say…it’s that I’ve got too much to say.

I’m preaching Ephesians 5.1-20. The minor subjects that covers?

Sexual immorality
Greed
Coarse Joking/Language
Idolaters not inheriting the Kingdom of God
Walk as wise, not unwise
Know what the will of God is
Not drunk on wine but on the Spirit

They all have to do with identity and a divided heart…in other words, if you struggle with sexual sins it’s more of a heart issue, not a discipline issue.

“Ohhhh, but it is a discipline area and we have to do right things!”

I think my sound, theological answer to that is ….bullcrap. Think it’s a coincidence that ’self-discipline’ is listed as a fruit of the Spirit? I don’t. It’s all about the first and last verses in the section…I think…

Live as a loved kid of God and be filled with nothing but His Spirit.

Is that it? Is that the sermon?

I never thought of it being a heart issue not a discipline issue. I cant wait to hear the rest in Sunday.

    Heart issue?

JAS 3:9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. NIV

Does course joking/language include things like “what the heck?” and “bull crap!”? Maybe just crap?

I think you’re on the right track - it is about the heart. Check out Matthew 15:19 - “For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.” Sure these are the “hard” sins, but don’t they come from performing the “small” sins over and over again? Or do they?

I also think that we are to be disciplined in our speech. Maybe it ’s a both/and not an either/or.
