Bush is getting a beat down in the media. And you know what? He should. I’m not going to even try to defend him and his administration. He did everything right after 9/11. He’s pretty much been absent in this. And leaders can’t lead if they aren’t present.
That budget surplus? I think you’ve got your project on where to spend it.
But the media is missing two other huge scapegoats.
The Mayor of New Orleans. How in the world does a city the size of New Orleans not have a disaster plan? If they do have one, why weren’t they using it the 4 days before the storm hit? Why is he down there now screaming into microphones? Why didn’t he do that days before the storm? Why didn’t he exercise his municipal powers BEFORE the storm by using city buses and school buses to evacute the sick and the elderly THEN?
The second one is the governor of Louisana. I’m a former Army soldier, was in the Reserves and National Guard. Why didn’t she activate them BEFORE the storms? ALL of them? When shots were fired, why wasn’t martial law declared, the Guard sent in and the city taken over?
We aren’t hearing a loss of command and control in Mississippi and Alabama - so is that Bush’s ‘fault’ too?
My dad is a retired fireman/paramedic in Alabama. He’s working in Gulfport right now, he works for FEMA. When Hurricane Dennis came through earlier this summer and Hurrican Ivan last year, he made a comment to me in passing that at the time - I didn’t even think about it.
He said to me - thankfully this didn’t Louisana. I had no idea what in the world he was talking about so I didn’t even bother to ask him why. I think I know why now.
Good News: More churches are parternering to help victims than ever in history. God is gift wrapping people to us to minister to. Time to quit ranting and go serve.

we’ve seen that there is some very decent people in New Orleans during the last few days of the crisis, but it is also a city that is renown for political corruption. this is a great example where people are engaged in political office for reasons other than serving. sadly this city is reaping what they’ve sown.

You know, I wish there would be a little more focus on what GOOD is being done around the country with people opening their homes and pocket books than all the finger pointing that is going on.
I am really getting tired of seeing and hearing Geraldo acting like he knows all the answers. The media has too much time on their hands to focus on the negative which just breeds more negativity.
I am thankful there are so many churches and even people not in the church helping. I think I will start a post where people can tell about the good stories that come out of this.

You go Grant! This is the USA not a third world country. We are only as weak as our weakest link. There were certainly some weak leaders in the chain of command. It is more than tragic that our citizens died of thirst or lack of medical care due to elected officials not anticipating what had to be done!!
I think the quote is ” die trying” not wait and watch the dying.

jlo — hear! hear! There are too many unknowns right now for people to be formulating so many opinions and spreading negativity — on CNN last night, they were even trying to turn it into a racist event. Amy and I have family that was activated to go help in the rescues and his take is significantly different from what is being shown on the news. Bottom line is that there is a lot of good being done and a lot of folks going above and beyond. Did the government (federal, state and/or local) respond correctly? I don’t know — neither does anyone else for sure — yet. I just hope that the outpouring of good continues for a long time, because this thing isn’t going to be cleared up anytime soon
