Serenity and Penguins

Watched Serenity, a sci-fi Star Wars meets Mad Max. I really liked it. I learned that it used to be a tv show called Firefly, was cancelled and now is a movie. I was fairly impressed with the movie - the whole reluctant hero routine fighting against the evil establishment.

Usability with youth group: search for Utopia, Idea of befriending the friendless, doing what’s right in spite of costs, mission, leadership…it’s all there. OR you could just watch the movie and enjoy for what it is: a young Star Wars fan director who finally got to make a movie, and a pretty good one at that.

Then I ventured into March of the Penguins. Normally, I love documentaries. And I liked this one but I think it was over-hyped. The kids got bored out of their minds with it. Yes, the story was fantistic, the scenery was stunning, and the music incredible. It was also incredibly slow. Could have been an hour long and just as powerful.

The special features on the DVD are awesome. How they filmed it, ‘critter cam’ on the back of a penguin, and a Bugs Bunny short. (Don’t ask)

Usability with youth group: If you dare risk your rep on showing a penguin movie - go ahead. There is alot to talk about, God’s design, parenting, sacrifice, endurance. Just be sure to wake ‘em up before you start talking.
