For the first time in my adult life, I didn’t watch the Academy Awards last night. I really didn’t care - truth be told. I told Amy - the film that should win best picture, best director, and best screenplay isn’t - Crash. I posted on this film back in November of last year. I think it’s a must see for youth workers - especially those in racially divided areas.
And I really didn’t want to hear anymore actors proving both their incredible talent and their ignorance.
I was half-justified. Crash did win Best Picture - and it should have. It didn’t win best director - which I don’t get. If a film wins Best Picture - how can any other film be directed better? Just asking.
Alas - George Clooney opened his mouth it appears…
“We’re the ones who were talking about AIDS when it was just being whispered, and we talked about civil rights when it wasn’t really popular … I’m proud to be a part of this academy, proud to be a part of this community and proud to be out of touch,”
Great, George. Then explain to me why the first Black actor and actress to win an Academy Award was in 2002? Why is there still not a woman leading a major motion picture company? Why is it career suicide for an actor to REALLY BE GAY instead of just acting like one? Why is Africa off the radar now? (We solve the poverty problem just because we made one movie about it?)
All of that to say that the actors in Hollywood remind of religious people - all words, no action, no heart change.

*clap* *clap* *clap* bravo, well said.
The one good thing about last night was watching John Stewart make fun of Hollywood right to their face.
“…and that’s why I think Scientology is not only good for Hollywood but good for America.” -after coming back from a commercial break as if he were caught talking about it.
And then there was this:
“Ladies and gentlemen, Martin Scorsese oscars 0, Three 6 Mafia oscars 1.”
The Academy is a joke.

Speaking of the oscars, here’s a computer spin off on Brokeback Mountain. You may be offended, but I though it was funny.

didn’t hattie mcdaniel win an oscar for gone with the wind? maybe I’m wrong.

Hattie was the first black to win any Oscar - for supporting actress in 1938. The next win was Sidney Portier in 1963 as a lead role. Halle Berry and Denzel were the next in 2002.
Plus, never has an ‘out of the closet’ gay ever been nominated or won an Oscar OR had steady work in Hollywood after ‘coming out’ - see Rupert Everett.
Pretty sparse by any standards - let alone an industry that prides itself as the ‘champion of outsiders.’
