I was listening to Doug Fields’ podcast last week and they made a passing ‘insult’ to how most professional ministers sign off their emails.
In Him,
Consumed by the Call,
Acquired the Fire,
Love, Peace, and Chicken Grease,
It was quite funny. Even though I’ve used (and at times still use) some of these sign offs, I’ve often wondered - why the heck do we use them? We don’t talk that way. When we end a conversation, we just say…bye. See ya’ later. Talk to ya’ later. Or…remember not to suck today. (Okay, maybe that last one is only used by those us in Grace’s student ministry.)
So a couple of questions for us today…why do we use them? Which ones have you ’seen’ (ie used) that make you laugh or cringe?

They all kind of make me cringe. My wife uses “In Christ’s Love” which is ok. It can be kind of funny when she forwards me an off-color joke email that is signed “In Christ’s Love.” It makes me chuckle.
A popular one here at FamilyLife is “In His Grip.” For some reason that reminds me of the Abominable Snowman on the Bugs Bunny cartoons. “I will hug him and squeeze him and name him George.”

Good question. I have used them as well. As of late I have been using “Press On”. I think it CAN be like a “currahee”. I think I have signed off with that one as well.
maybe we sometimes do it because that is what everyone else is doing. Some are funny, some make you cringe, but some make you think and encourage and make me smile or laugh. I even hope when I sign off “Press On”, that it makes others think of Philippians 3. I don’t know, I have never asked anyone if it does.
I will end with one of my favorites that my friend Matthew Hooper uses often…
Enjoy Every Breath

I have used for a while now, “Keep Lovin’ Jesus” to those that I know love Jesus. I think that sums up what my goal is on good days and bad days. What does the poll say? Suck? or okay?
Keep Lovin’ Jesus,
Len
