So my sermon this morning was “If you ever find yourself naked in the cemetery at night…” and to start off the sermon I used the intros to two of my favorite shows - Deadliest Catch and Dog, the Bounty Hunter.
Now before you think I’m completely off my rocker - check out Mark 4 and 5. Jesus calms a storm that made fishermen nervous and heals a demon-possessed man that chains couldn’t contain. How can you think of anything BUT Deadliest Catch and Dog, the Bounty Hunter?
I was sitting in the back of the auditorium when the clips were rolling. 98% of the men in the room sat up and smirked. Sweet justification to their wives I suppose that they weren’t the only people on the planet who watched those shows. In fact, one guy grabbed me after the service.
“I knew this was going to be an awesome sermon when I heard Bon Jovi’s Dead of Alive!!” (That would be the theme song to Deadliest Catch.)
What about the other 2%? I’m not sure. Let’s just say it was further confirmation that it doesn’t matter how great of an idea it is, somebody somewhere is going to hate it.
All in all - it was a fun text to work with and walk with for the last couple of weeks. And I’ll never watch those two shows the same way again.

Sounds like a great sermon. I really like the way you changed the Bon Jovi into resurrection song instead of a choice of soteriology. “Dead of Alive” “Dead or Alive” Great work.

I’m still waiting for the podcast to show up. Didn’t get to hear it yesterday. I was back in the 2-year-olds class banging out tunes on the Fisher-Price piano.
