Crap like this just makes me want to find the nearest rock and hide under it. Or pick it up and throw it. I definitely know how Jesus feels about that so I’ll just blog instead.
Pastor claims literal interpretation of the Bible means that women should not teach men - so a woman who has taught Sunday School for 54 years was asked to quit by their pastor.
If she was boring - fine, ask her to quit. If she’s been falling asleep in her own lessons after 54 years of teaching - that’s grounds for resignation.
But because she’s “missing” a chromosome? And it took you 54 years to figure it out?
I’m wondering if they are going to start drinking poison and handling dangerous snakes now - since that is also what the Bible “literally” says we should do.
Exhibit A in “It’s possible to quote the Bible and be unbiblical.”

Nothing surprises me anymore.
(Doesn’t mean it doesn’t make me angry, just doesn’t surprise me.)

So, what is your take on the verse in question? Should we ignore it?

so….. what’s wrong with snakes?? Just kidding - I would almost bet this was a Baptist church, if I were a betting man.

“It’s possible to quote the Bible and be unbiblical.”
That’s what Satan did to Jesus isn’t it?
That’s why you should never read a Bible verse.

Nice catch, Mike R..
So this is more like Exhibit…F or G then, right?
Should we ignore it? Why not. We ignore a lot of other things in scripture.
Seriously, good hermenuetics starts with asking some questions of the text.
1. What did it mean then?
2. Were there cultural considerations?
3. Is this issue handled elsewhere in scripture?
4. Is there a uniform witness to this issue in scripture?
Paul in Corinthians says WHEN a woman preaches, she needs to have a head covering.
So he obviously allowed women to teach in Corinth in “big church”, plus the first people to tell Jesus’ story were women.
So you put the verse in a larger context and it all of a sudden doesn’t become so clear and “literal.”

Excuse this rant from Denver. Saw this on the 10 o’clock news last night under national news. Words on screen were “Pastor fires Sunday School Teacher” after seeing this I put this in the mental filing cabinet right next to the fool I saw on Fox News with the heading of “Ferrell vs. Relgious Right”! No wonder everyone thinks Christians are indiots! Since when has the media ever been kind to a Christian? What happen to people thinking before they speak on God’s or the Churches behalf? Sorry I know Right Indignation took over! We all know that we will win the war but for once can we at least win the battle of keeping our mouth shut when we need to as Christians? Can we also remember that we should not expect non-christians to act like christians! For this poor pastor in New York, I am sure your new church in South Carolina will love they have a celb in the pulpit and to this poor christian movie critic I say “PowerAid is great drink”. To the poor lady that has been asked to leave here position as a sunday school teacher thanks for 54 years of service, since now a days it is hard to get someone to stay in a church building for 54 minutes on a Sunday Morning.

Check out the church’s website, I really think there is more to this story than was reported on CNN.
