A Life That Rocks

January 8th, 2007 · 2 Comments · 11 views

We kicked off our new series at ReFuel called “A Life That Rocks.” Sound familiar Little Rock crew? It should. At first I was determined to not recycle anything. I think that was more of an issue of pride than of “spiritual maturity.”

The truth of the matter is this - after observing for the past 3 months, the painful truth is this - they don’t need more of me or any other volunteer on my staff. They need Jesus.

Sound trite? Sound cliche’? I agree. The problem is this - it’s true.

So how do you “teach” an encounter with Jesus?

You can’t. Contrary to what my history with the Southern Baptists, the surest way to make Jesus boring is to start teaching him as opposes to turning Him loose in your ministry. It’s an experience thing. You kinda have to be there.

So this is where we start. Every week we’ll face a room full of faces that aren’t exactly sure that chasing and loving Jesus more than anything is really worth it. So Jesus himself is going to have to convince them.

Which is probably how it should be in the first place.

Some of the questions I hope we unpack over the next few weeks:

What is so important about a ‘transforming encounter with God?” I’m saved, isn’t that enough?
Have you ever had a ‘God-moment’ where you knew God was talking to you? What was that like? What did He say?
What do you think it sounds like to hear God speak to you? Would that freak you out?
What would you do (or be willing to do/pay) to have God speak to you?
What’s the risks/rewards of hearing God speak to you?

What is the point of the disciplines?
Is being more like Christ really that important? Why?
What do you think will be the hardest discipline to practice? What will be the easiest?
What in my life really needs to change? Do I want to change? Why or why not?
What are the benefits of becoming more like Jesus? What do you think is the ‘down-side’?
What do you want to get out of this series?

G - that’s not just a student issue. Take it from me, it’s an adult issue as well. We don’t teach “hearing from God” and somehow expect people to get it.
