Long Messages

January 26th, 2007 · 13 Comments · 22 views

I got an email from a buddy today -

Grant,

Did XXXXX leave long messages on your cell phone?

I laughed out loud because - SHE used to all the time. I think it’s a woman thing.

For example - if I call someone, IF I EVEN LEAVE A VOICEMAIL, it’s something like this -

“It’s Grant. Give me a yell.”

Or…”You’re a dweeb and loser and I love you for it.” - Mainly for Bruce and Wayne and Harry.

Amy is now awesome at this. So is our good friend Renee’. Early on, I’d get a message worthy of a soliloquy in a Shakespeare play. And I’m sure that the intent was awesome but a guy’s attention span on a message is about 7 seconds.

A common conversation when I’d call back was like this…

“Did you get my message?”

Me, not telling the WHOLE truth: “Yeah.”

[Insert Long Pause]

“Well, what do you think?”

Me, completely busted that I did not listen to the message but still trying to fake it: “Well, let’s talk about it for a bit. Do you really think that?”

“You didn’t listen to the message, did you?”

“No.”

“WHY DO I EVEN LEAVE YOU A MESSAGE??!!!”

“Well, that’s exactly my question.”

Click.

I’m not saying one is better than the other but I think women GENERALLY leave longer messages than MEN do. Okay, i really am saying that one is better than the other but that is beside the point. What we really need to do is a Mythbusters on this one.

Well, I know I have that reputation, but it wasn’t me this time!!!

What’s worse at work is people who do that with email. I get an email and then within 5 minutes the person is standing in my office…
    “did you see my email?”

    “yes”

    “what do you think?”

“I said I saw your email, not read it, what’s it about?”

    “well, you should read it.”

“If it is so important you came down two flights of stairs within 5 minutes of sending it to talk to me about it, then why don’t you tell me what it’s about?”

I agree on VM’s though too…I hate long ones. A long VM requires me to take a note and act on it at a later times which means I’ve got to keep up with said note.

I also hate long comments on blogs — like this one.

Long comments on blogs could be okay if commenter…

    A) has a point

    B) has their own blog

    and

    C) writes on own blog more than once a month.

  • 6 wayne // Jan 28, 2007 at 7:39 am

    A) define point.
    B) got one. but why is that a prereq for posting long comments.
    C) definitely post more than once a month. I can do the stats manually and see that…much better than your “most popular” stats which we proved don’t work.

So I guess my long comment is OK.

exactly - the “most popular” thing is bizarre to me and mystery that I’m still trying to figure out.

I love the idea but the practical outworkings of the plugin just isn’t working…

    Call me.

I love leaving long messages…sometimes I leave messages in the form of song.

ok…here’s my two cents. i beg to differ that it’s only men - i have a father and brother and a boss (who you know) who are VERY good at leaving long messages…and me too. it has to do with processing thoughts as you’re talking. yes, it might be better if we shortened and said, ‘gimme a call’, but then no one would mock us for it!

so no…it’s not only women. just so you know.

(i think that fell into the ‘long comment’ criteria…?)

Jill - your boss talks alot. I can see the potential for an extremely long message with him.

Kayla - we love you dearly. But we don’t always listen to the entire message.

if a long message can eliminate the need for a LOOOOONG conversation, i’m all for it. if i can listen, compile my response and leave it in a message rather than spend wasted time on chit/chat - then i’m fine with it.

if, on the other hand, it is just mindless rambling, then yeah … male or female, it’s just a waste of good air time.

i think it is always a tricky business to gender-type behaviors. but that’s just me and i’m a woman, so there it is ……

ok. i’m really just trying to leave the longest blog comment. how am i doin?

tell me what you want and where to reach you, otherwise you’re getting cut off and I’ll call you back.
