The Biggest Lies We’ve Told You

August 22nd, 2007 · 6 Comments · 53 views

This is the title of the new series we’re starting tonight for Refuel. (Our youth worship experience.) I can’t tell you how amped I am about it.

It’s not because I’ve got it all figured out. In fact, I’m so stinking behind, I’m toying with the idea of locking myself in a coffee shop for the next 2 days for the single purpose of writing.

BUT the potential of it…is huge.

Tonight we’ll break down into small groups and brainstorm about the biggest lies we tell teens.

Got any you want to add?

Lies I’ve told teens as a youth pastor:

“This is your ministry, guys…” (”…now here’s MY sermon for you tonight”)

“You should bring your friends here…” (”…because my job depends on it”)

“All you have to do is pray this prayer…” (”…and then get into a small group, and read the Bible, and get your parents to come to the church, and get your friends to come out, too, and…”)

    Good ones, T.

Here are the ones that were said tonight…

    “God could never forgive you.”

    “God doesn’t know you.”

    “No one will ever know.”

    “We promise we’ll never divorce.”

    Ah… missed the angle.

    Those are good, too.

    In that genre…

“Just be yourself.” (Discourages transformation - anything with the word “just” in it, for that matter, is usually wrong)

“If you give yourself to Jesus, everything (friendships, peer pressure, grades, relationships with parents, etc.) in your life will be great.”

“No one will ever love you because you are to stupid, fat, ugly and worthless.”

When are you going to discuss the thing teens do because of the lies they told? How do you fight the lies and teach yourself to not believe them?

Good one, Christine. That’s part of the discussion - how we react, is that healthy or not, is there anything in scripture that can help us…
