Everybody loves grilled cheese sandwiches but we never order them out, do we? Why is that?
Money? I mean does it really cost 4.95 to make a grilled cheese sandwich?
Rep? What if someone sees me eating this in public?
Standard of Excellence? Some places don’t put enough butter on the bread or they toast it too light or too dark. It’s not hard to make but it’s easy to screw it up.
My new favorite variation of this sandwich - the turkey and cheese grilled sandwich. With a Coke.
This is why I love eating lunch at home.

If it were socially acceptable, I’d order the GC from the kids menu at Chili’s. My daughter often orders it and I always have a couple of bites (with her permission, of course.) That’s a pretty good GC.
But if I’m adding meat, I go with ham over turkey.

cost is the usual deterrent for me–i can make it at home for nothing, why pay $4 for it? although i confess to occasionally getting the grilled cheese at sonic, its quite good. at home, my favorite is grilled ham and swiss on sourdough with homemade spicy honey mustard.

when we lived in birmingham, the company i worked for had a cafeteria. They would serve their chilli with grilled cheese sandwhiches — oh…it was soooo good…i’ve never seen so much butter on a grilled cheese sandwhich…then dunking it in that aweseome chili — a little taste of heaven.

So ACTUALLY, “grilled-cheese-sandwiches” were an out-on-the-go staple for me in Istanbul. I can’t tell you how many days in a row I would grab a “kasarli tost” (toast with cheese) before hopping on a boat or a bus or heading into class or a meeting. They were everywhere! AND they were crazy cheap, equivalent to about a dollar or less.
Gotta love Istanbul! Maybe you should visit…

It’s amazing how wonderful grilled cheese sandwiches are.
Wayne - with chili? That sounds way too good. Great on a ski day. Of course if you bought it on a mountain it would cost you $12.50.
Speaking of Ski Days…one coming up on Monday.

I need to send you a loaf of my grandfather’s homemade bread. I swear it is the best grilled cheese I have ever had. I don’t know what it is about his bread, but it is good. And you may have always done this, but I recently learned it is way better if you melt the butter first, put it on the griddle, then put the sandwich in the middle. I used to spread the butter on the bread and then grill. way better the other way.

Great stuff - melt the butter first!!!
I like using wheat bread as well. I like the taste but it lessens the guilt of eating a grilled cheese sandwich.
