When it was announced last night that John Lynch had left the Broncos to ‘explore his options’ elsewhere, I was not a happy camper.
In terms of talent/playing time, I’m not sure how much the Broncos lost here. There are 4 safeties on the team that can all play, hit, and cover. So John’s role was going to be one of coach/mentor/sage more than stud safety that will knock your head off.
However, it’s on the leadership side of things that concerns me. Leaders on a team are important. They often have more weight than coaches. In this past year the Broncos have lost Al Wilson, Jason Elam, Rod Smith, and now John Lynch. Those were stud leaders, vocal and pushing leaders on the team.
Who will step up? Who knows but this is going to be one interesting year in Broncoland.

I am sorry that some class leaders have either left or been allowed to leave the Broncos. As to who will step up, it is time for the younger guys to show their leadership skills.
When the “regular” leaders are always there to push, talk, encourage, etc. the youger guys are willing to let age and experience lead the charge. Look at the Rockies. Tulo stepped into a leadership position because the guys who should be leaders (Helton, Holiday, Hawpe [notice an "H" thing here?]) were not leading the team in a way that Tulo thought they should. Or perhaps he just saw one of the aspects of leadership not being fulfilled. He, as a rookie, stepped up.
Bronco fans can only hope that the younger guys fill the void. And don’t expect the vocal leaders to come from the O-Line. They are shy.
