We don’t have cable but we do have Netflix. And the two most wonderful things about Netflix are the TV series you can watch (White Collar, Burn Notice, Lost, Psych, ect) AND their incredible archive of documentary films.
My family does not share my love of documentaries. It is something – much like my love for art museums – that I find myself enjoying alone. And this blog is that way as well. Ha ha.
But before you hit the snooze button on me – documentaries can be awesome. The recent 30 for 30 films by ESPN have for the most part been outstanding.
Here is my the rating scale:
1 – Avoid like plague
2 – Naptime material. Cures insomnia.
3 – Ehhh. Must really like material.
4 – Worth the watch.
5 – Must watch.
Here are the last few I’ve watched on Netflix.
Happy People: A Year In The Tiaga: 4
About life in Siberia. Goes through the 4 seasons with a trapper. I loved it but I also love all those outdoor shows. I think it’s incredible how they live.
Why Ships Sink: 3
So I watched this while on vacation. Pretty fascinating and unnerving. Talks about the sinking of the Italian cruiser a couple of years ago. Wouldn’t watch this if you are going on a cruise anytime soon.
Johnny Carson: King of Late Night: 5
Must watch this one. Holy cow, what an incredible entertainer this guy was. And you will be blown away by how many people got their start on Carson and how funny Carson was.
That Guy Who Was In That Thing: 4
A real look into the life of actors and how hard it is to make it. Great lines in this one.
Chasing Ice: 4
Hard one to rate. The message is how are ice caps and glaciers are melting. But it’s not a political rant from a left wing nutjob. It’s a photographer’s 6+ year journey taking pictures of these places and what his eyes were seeing. This one will move you.
High Ground: 2.5
The story sounds incredible – take wounded veterans on a climb in Nepal. Use it as a healing experience for them. The movie was just slow. The editors just didn’t move the story fast at all.
Done The Impossible: 3
I wanted this to be awesome because it is about the story of Firefly and Serenity. I love Firefly. Can’t believe it only was one season long. Incredible series, that is must watch. But this doc on how the fans saved it for a season – didn’t like it.
Alright…enough of that.
