Be True To The Absent

We have a “Leadership Nugget” before we start our Council meetings. Last night, my good friend Gary Manford stepped up and said the most 5 crucial words that every leader needs to remember.

Be True To The Absent.

Gary elaborated a bit more. When in a conversation and the other person begins to bad mouth or talk ill of another person, his opinion of them seems to immediately drop. Do they talk like that about me when I am not around? Are they generally an honest person?

Instead, be true to the absent. If a person is absent from the conversation, be true to them. Speak the best of them.

We all know not to gossip or speak bad about people behind their back. I just thought this was one of the more eloquent ways to remember it.
