Waiting Rooms Are Altars

Sunday morning, 12:28 am. Phones ringing at this hour is never good. “Get to hospital ER. Fatality wreck. Need the Chaplain. When can you get here?”

8 minutes.

You know what 8 minutes feels like in an ER lobby?

8 years.

“We are having this baby tomorrow. It’s early but….”

I’ll be there in 8 minutes.

I’ll wait in both places. One wait is filled with hope, laughter, nervous excitement. The other one feels empty and cold.

But both are altars. One will be of praise. One will be of questions, anger, an hurt. One will be at Psalm 34:8. The other at Psalm 34:18.

He will be at both. He will honor both. He’s big enough to handle both.

Psalm 34:8
Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.

Psalm 34:18
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
