The Hairy Camel…

This originally appeared as a weekly devo on whillschurch.org.

Wednesdays can be a hard day. Cayden normally starts it with a laugh by asking me – “Dad, dad, dad…guess what day it is? What day is it?” And normally it’s so early in the morning, I don’t realize it before it’s too late.

“It’s HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMP DAEEEEEEY!”

It’s on Wednesday when I realize how the message is coming. While we plan 9 to 12 months out what we are going to teach, putting it all together into a service that will both inspire, challenge, humor, and help people normally all comes together on Wednesdays.

Or not. If it isn’t coming together by Wednesday, there is a general sense of restlessness in me. And that can get transferred to Rick. Doesn’t happen often…but it does happen.

Wednesday are when youth, ladies bible study, and Awana invade the building. It’s when we try to send out the weekly e-news letter which means my weekly e-vo must be done.

It’s on Wednesdays that I try to have a pastor’s lunch with other pastors in town.

It’s on Wednesdays, particularly during basketball, upward, and musical season that we realize we haven’t had a ton of down time as a family. It’s on Wednesdays we normally hear about a project that is due on Thursday.

Wednesday is also daddy/daughter date night.

This Wednesday, the English family will have a huge adjustment to make. Eduardo and Martina will come to live with us for the next 3 months. For those of you who don’t know who they are – Dudu (Eduardo’s nickname) and Martina lead the Discipleship Training Center in Porte Alrege, Brazil with the Schneiders. They are part of the Word of Life family in Brazil.

All of that to say, as I sat down to write out the weekly e-vo, I was seriously struggling with what to write. So I read the verse of the day in YouVersion…

Philippians 4:8-9
And now dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me – everything you heard from me and saw me doing.

Then the God of peace will be with you.

We all have Wednesdays – those moments when we feel like we are in the middle of something and we don’t know if it is worth it to press on or just give up. It could be a relationship, a project, a habit we are trying to break or start. Could be in our marriage, parenting, or work or life itself.

Wednesdays may be for a lot of things but they are NOT for quitting.

Wednesdays are NOT for quitting.

That big, fat, hairy, annoying camel is the perfect reminder for us – just keep walking. Just keep putting into practice those good, noble things. You might be annoying to those around you but check out the reward…

The God of peace will be with you.

And He’s good company.
